Summer Update

•  SkyLaw Leads Medical Marijuana Acquisition

On July 14, 2016, SkyLaw client PharmaCan Capital Corp. (TSX-V: MJN) announced that it entered into a share purchase agreement to acquire Peace Naturals Project Inc. PharmaCan is a merchant bank focused on investing in Canada’s medical marijuana industry. Peace is licensed by Health Canada as a producer and distributor of medical marijuana and has state-of-the-art facilities capable of producing three million grams of marijuana annually. 

The Canadian medical marijuana industry is booming with monthly growth in patients of 10% according to The Globe and MailWe expect to see a lot more M&A activity in this red hot industry. “Stay tuned…”

SkyLaw was pleased to recently host a ‘Wine & Learn’ event with Social Venture Partners (SVP) Toronto on the topic: “Demystifying Charities, Not-For-Profits and Social Enterprises”

•  SkyLaw Welcomes Summer Student

Each year we invite a student to join us for the summer to gain experience working in a law firm. This year we are pleased to have Ian Johnston join us. He is taking the lead on some of SkyLaw’s projects including putting together a business plan for our expanded corporate services group.

•  SkyLaw Team Enjoys Summer Social Events

So far this summer, the SkyLaw team has enjoyed a Blue Jays game, a fun day of golfing, and a sailing excursion around the Toronto islands. Our golf day was held at Dentonia Golf Course on July 15 and featured a lesson with a golf pro, a friendly round of golf, followed by a barbecue dinner. We are so proud of our senior law clerk, Devi Panday, who played golf for the first time and got a birdie on her third hole! Special thanks to Maya Bretgoltz, our 2015 summer student, for the gift of personalized “SkyLaw” golf balls!

Kevin to Speak at CSCS Conference

Kevin West has been invited to speak at the 2016 annual conference for the Canadian Society of Corporate Secretaries (CSCS) held in Whistler, BC in August. Kevin will be speaking on critical issues in governance, namely the role of the Board in special situations (M&A, going private transactions, spinoffs, etc.).
